Kevin Magnussen joins BMW and its LMDh program
F1. As he competes in his final Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi this weekend, the Dane will continue his endurance adventure with BMW. His father is also involved in long-distance races.
He will not have stayed long without a steering wheel. Kevin Magnussen will no longer be part of the F1 grid next year, but the Dane will join another one. The future former Haas driver has just joined BMW and its LMDh program, with which the German brand competes in WEC and IMSA.
Kevin Magnussen is an exceptional addition to our LMDh program. He has consistently demonstrated his speed at the highest level in Formula 1 over the past decade. Thanks to his vast experience, he is a real asset to our project, highlights Andreas Roos, Director of BMW M Motorsport.
A return to endurance
This is not the first time that the man at number 20 is linked to endurance. In 2021, he completed a full season in IMSA and participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with his father, Jan. He was also in the running to be one of the drivers of the Peugeot 9X8, but was given the green light by the French team to return to F1 in 2022, following the dismissal of Nikita Mazepin.
The fact that he has already taken part in a full prototype season in 2021 is an additional advantage for us, as this will certainly facilitate his adaptation to the BMW M Hybrid V8. I am very happy that he is now part of the family.
WEC, IMSA, both?
For now, BMW does not know what mission to entrust to the Dane. Will he be in IMSA? Will he be in WEC? Will he take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans? Regardless of his schedule, Kevin Magnussen is looking forward to this new adventure.
« I am happy and proud to represent on some of the most legendary races in the world such an iconic brand in motor racing as BMW. After ten years in Formula 1, I am opening an exciting new chapter and I am looking forward to taking on the challenge behind the wheel of the most innovative prototypes in the history of endurance racing.
