Fernando Alonso comes a long way since he almost didn’t participate in his second home race after the Spanish Grand Prix in May. The Renault team was finally allowed to compete this weekend at the European Grand Prix taking place in Valencia, Spain. Happy to be racing, the Spaniard arrives relaxed on this urban track built near the port.<\/p>\n
He certainly remembers the Hungarian GP as he achieved a remarkable feat by securing pole position. Unfortunately, we all recall the outcome of the race with a wheel flying off… Alonso thus has the chance to race in front of his fans and hopes to thank them for their support with a podium finish…<\/p>\n
Fernando, the race in Hungary was disappointing, but we can take some positives from this Grand Prix…<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00ab Yes, our performance in Hungary was encouraging, the car was fast and we took pole position, which was actually a bit of a surprise. Of course, having to retire was disappointing, but I’m looking on the bright side. I think we can be just as competitive in Valencia. Last year, my race there was very short – less than a lap – so I’m even more determined this year and I hope to be able to fight for a podium. \u00bb<\/p>\n
What state of mind is the team in after this summer break?<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00ab The break has been beneficial for everyone: the team has recharged its energy and is ready to give it their all in this last part of the season. I also have a new teammate, Romain Grosjean. I am sure he will do a good job with the team. Since he has attended all the Grand Prix races since the beginning of the season, I already have a good relationship with him and I hope he will be able to help us score important points for the championship. \u00bb<\/p>\n
Are you preparing to run in Spain this weekend? Is it something important to you?<\/b><\/p>\n
Running at home is always very special and Valencia is a great city to host a Grand Prix. I’ve always loved street circuits because the atmosphere is very unique, the entire city gets involved in the race. So, it’s a home Grand Prix and I know the support from the fans will be fantastic. I really want to thank them with a good result. As I mentioned, I would really like to be able to fight for a podium, but my priority this weekend will be to score points.<\/p>\n
