While teams like Andretti are trying to convince that an 11th or 12th team on the grid would be good for the sport, it is becoming increasingly evident that the best option to be present in F1 is to buy an already existing team.<\/p>\n
Indeed, this is the case for all teams except four: McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, and Haas, as they haven’t taken over operations of an already existing team. According to British journalist Ted Kravitz, several teams would be open to discussion:<\/p>\n
“(D) I think there are about four teams that are potentially for sale if the price is right,” comments the pit reporter at Sky Sport.<\/p>\n
I think that even if McLaren says they are not for sale, everything has a price. Williams, Haas, and AlphaTauri are the other teams that are potentially for sale if the price is high enough. The other teams tend to be linked to a manufacturer or, like Aston Martin, to a consortium that operates a manufacturer, so a sale is more complicated.<\/p>\n
Buying an F1 team is only possible at a certain price, and Kravitz suggests that the figure would be close to one billion dollars.<\/p>\n
You won’t get a Formula 1 team with the franchise’s value for anything less than $850 or $900 million.<\/p>\n
I asked Gene Haas [owner of the eponymous team] when Audi showed interest in the middle of last year, “Is the team for sale?” He said, “No, not really. But if someone were to offer something close to a billion dollars, then everything is for sale.”<\/p>\n
Kravitz also suggests that the four teams mentioned above would be open to an offer, but almost all of them have said that they are not for sale. In the case of Williams, Haas, and McLaren, it seems nonsensical to sell now, especially after going through a pandemic and being able to reap the rewards of increased interest in Formula 1. Therefore, AlphaTauri seems to be the most open team on the subject since they have said little about their future following rumors that Red Bull would be willing to sell their sister team.
