We explain how the FIA’s heavy decision in Montreal was made
The decision, made two-thirds into the race, clearly determined the future winner of the race in Montreal, virtually giving the top podium spot to Lewis Hamilton. But how is this decision, penalizing Sebastian Vettel with a five-second penalty, explained? Here is the full report from the decision-making stewards.

The commissioners, after receiving a report from the race management, were faced with the following facts:
Pilot No: 5 – Sebastian Vettel
Team: Scuderia Ferrari
Time: 15:13
**Session:** Course
Fact: Car No. 5 went off the track, rejoined the track in an unsafe manner, and pushed another car off the track.
**Infraction:** Involved in an incident defined by Article 38.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.
Decision: 5-second penalty (as well as 2 points deducted from his Super License, 7 points in total over the 12-month period).
Motive: The stewards reviewed the video illustrating the incident and determined that car no. 5, having left the track at turn no. 3, rejoined the track at turn no. 4 in an unsafe manner, forcing vehicle no. 44 off the circuit. Car no. 44 had to make an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision.
The teams were reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions made by the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA Sporting Code and Article 9.1.1 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the specified time limits.
Note that Ferrari announced that an appeal will be made regarding this controversial decision.
