The story between McLaren and Fernando Alonso is far from over. Their ties are even strengthening in the beginning of 2019 as the Spanish driver, freshly retired from Formula 1, has just been appointed ambassador of the team based in Woking.

In this new role, the double world champion will be able to advise the team’s drivers and engineers. He will also participate in some tests to support the development of the MCL34 and MCL35 by 2020. There is a good chance, therefore, of seeing the Spaniard in the Formula 1 paddocks this year, as he already made a notable appearance yesterday in Barcelona at the Catalunya circuit.

The main person concerned, who will participate with McLaren in the Indianapolis 500 this year, is very happy to stay within the Woking-based family: Becoming a McLaren ambassador is a true honor. It’s a special team, and despite the challenges we have faced recently, that remains the case. Before retiring from Formula 1 racing last year, I saw myself with McLaren for a very long time. So I am thrilled with this new role and the ability to remain closely associated with the team, which in my view, is my spiritual home. We have of course the Indianapolis 500 in May, which I am looking forward to, but this is only the beginning of many things we can do together. I am particularly passionate about developing young talents, whether with my own team or by helping the new generation of Formula 1 drivers at McLaren unleash their true potential. This is important for the team and for myself, so it will be a particularly rewarding part of my role.

McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, is aware of Alonso’s potential in this new role: “Fernando is part of the McLaren family. He has secured his place in the team’s history and continues to write his chapter in McLaren’s story. It is therefore entirely appropriate that we formalize his status as a McLaren ambassador by joining another double champion, Mika Häkkinen. For any racing team, having a member of Fernando’s caliber on board to provide assistance through his experience is extremely valuable. His knowledge and perspective will be well received by our drivers and engineers, while his stature and character remain very appealing to our partners and fans,” concluded the American.
