James Key had been on McLaren’s radar since the Canadian Grand Prix last year. At the time, there was talk of exchanging Lando Norris for James Key. An offer the British team consistently refused. It was later in 2018 that the Woking-based team announced they had secured the services of Key while he was still under contract with Toro Rosso.

It now seems that the two teams have reached an agreement, and James Key is indeed becoming the technical director of McLaren. However, the British engineer will start his role on March 25. Therefore, he will not have a real impact on the MCL34, but surely on the 2020 car.

Expectations remain high for the Briton, who will have the daunting task of bringing McLaren back to the top of the rankings. Amidst palace revolutions, a new driver duo, and a new engine supplier since last year, a true breath of fresh air is settling in at Woking.

Toro Rosso was therefore obliged to choose a new technical director, and their choice fell on Jody Egginton, who has been the performance director of the Italian team since 2017. Just like James Key, his duties will commence on March 25.
