Despite his departure from Williams, and from Formula 1 at the same time, a few months ago, the British engineer is finally returning as a technical consultant for F1.

Last November, Rob Smedley announced that after 20 years in Formula 1, it was time for him to focus a bit more on his private life and take a break. It seems the British engineer changes his mind easily.

Indeed, the former Ferrari and Williams engineer has accepted a role as a technical consultant for the pinnacle of motorsport. The task of the forty-year-old Briton will be to simplify the entire technical aspect of Formula 1 to make it more understandable.

Rob Smedley is not the first former team engineer to take this career path. Indeed, the former technical director of Ferrari from 1997 to 2006, Ross Brawn, has been the sporting director of Formula 1 since 2017.

The Briton seems delighted with this new career choice: “I still have a burning passion for Formula 1 and I hope this is a way for me to give back to the sport, to explain what I’ve learned over the past 20 years in Formula 1 as an engineer, not only from the technical or operational side, but also from the human side.”
