At the end of a Grand Prix marked by the spectacular crash between Lance Stroll and Brandon Hartley, Sebastian Vettel asserted Ferrari’s dominance from the start. The German optimized his ultra-soft tires during the first stint to secure his lead over Valtteri Bottas. He never relinquished the top position and claimed victory in front of delighted red-clad stands! True to his passion, the German gained perspective on the event.

First: Sebastian Vettel

« Perfect is probably the best way to describe things. But there is still a long way to go in the championship. So I’m not totally euphoric!

I mentioned yesterday how important this place is for Ferrari.

Canadian Tifosi have waited so long for the team to succeed here. 40 years after Gilles (Villeneuve)’s victory, it’s good to show that we are still alive… and that we are winning races!

In the process, Sebastian Vettel takes the lead in the championship, ahead of Lewis Hamilton by a single point. With 50 victories, the German is now one win away from matching Alain Prost. He will have the opportunity to equal the four-time French world champion… at Paul-Ricard, in two weeks!

Second: Valtteri Bottas

The Finn regains his preferred position this season, second place. And for good reason, the Mercedes driver climbs onto this spot on the podium for the fourth time. After a good weekend, Bottas still admits that he could hardly do better.

« Vettel was fast from the first lap. He had the feeling that he could control the race. We really pushed the whole race but we had issues at the end with our fuel consumption, which allowed Max to catch up with us.

The second place was the maximum possible today. Maybe it could have been different starting from pole…

Third: Max Verstappen

This time, the young Dutchman made a mark with his discretion. His second podium of the season was secured after a cautious race, despite an attempted overtake at the start on Bottas. At the other end of the race, the Red Bull driver almost overtook the Mercedes with the number 77: coming back at the end, Verstappen fell short by a tenth under the checkered flag!

« It was a good race. We had to pit quickly because the hypersoft tires were dead! But we really had a good pace with the supersofts, we were close to closing the gap! In the final laps, we were really competitive!
