This winter, Riyadh had hosted the Race of Champions for the first time, to highlight that women would finally have the right to obtain a driver’s license.

One year later, the kingdom will introduce a new discipline, Formula E. It will take advantage of its favorable winter climate to become the first event of the season. Thus, it is in Saudi Arabia that the second generation of the electric single-seater will participate in a competition.

But above all, the country has committed itself for the very long term as it is planned that there will be at least ten editions of this ePrix. The reason is that the local government wants to rely on it to promote change in the functioning of the country, initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This is explained by Prince Abdulaziz, the vice president of the General Sport Authority: « The duration of this partnership will offer Saudi Arabia and Formula E a platform to create a sustainable legacy for both parties over a decade. »

Indeed, one of the major breakthroughs is that women will indeed be allowed to attend the event in the stands, without any separation from their male counterparts. It is even planned that some of them will take to the track.

The first edition is scheduled for next December, but the details of the urban circuit have not yet been revealed.
