Nyck de Vries is switching to Prema
Nyck de Vries positions himself as a contender for the title in F2, by joining Prema, with which the last two champions of the category have been crowned. He will be supported by Sean Gelael.
For the past two years, Prema has established itself as the team to beat in GP2, and then in F2. Thus, during its first season in the category, its two drivers, Pierre Gasly and Antonio Giovinazzi, fought for the title until Abu Dhabi.
This season, if the team has not been able to retain its title in the Teams, Charles Leclerc has clearly dominated the championship. The objective for the Dutch driver can only be to aim for the title, as commented by René Rosin, the team director: « We are delighted to secure the services of Nyck for the 2018 Formula 2 season. His talent is undeniable and we hope that with Prema, he will be able to make the most of his talent and fight for the title while helping us to start the next season well.
This preparation will start this week with the post-season testing at the Abu Dhabi circuit. The McLaren protege will naturally participate with his new team. His return will be essential as F2 will then debut its brand new single-seater, which will also be equipped with the Halo. This will be all the more important as his teammate will be Sean Gelael, whose financial potential is much greater off the track since his first two seasons in the category ended in a very modest 15th place.
It is interesting to note that McLaren has decided to place its two young drivers in two different teams since Lando Norris will be aligned by Carlin. The Woking team is therefore not following the same strategy as Ferrari this season, which had placed Charles Leclerc and Antonio Fuoco in direct confrontation, to the clear advantage of the Monegasque.
For Nyck de Vries, this will be the year or never to break through in single-seaters as his seasons in GP3 or F2 have not lived up to his karting beginnings.
