A modest Belgian weekend start for Ferrari

This practice day at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix was rather disappointing for Scuderia Ferrari. Usually in a better position by Friday evening, the Italian team finds itself threatened by Red Bull for the status of the second force behind Mercedes this time. But the weekend is just beginning, and calm still seems to prevail at the Reds...

At Ferrari, pure performance was not really on display today at Spa-Francorchamps. This observation is particularly applicable to Sebastian Vettel. With a delay of about one and a half seconds compared to the benchmark set by Nico Rosberg during the second session, the winner of the last Grand Prix in Hungary didn’t seem at ease. He is even behind compared to Kimi Räikkönen: a half-second gap between the two drivers. The German thus admitted that he needs to work with his engineers to improve his car.

« It was not an ideal day, » he indeed specified to the journalists. « We had some difficulties finding a good rhythm. »

Of course, he is not satisfied with this tenth place obtained this afternoon. We must improve, we don’t want to finish in this position tomorrow. But he remains hopeful: I’m quite confident: we will improve the car. I’m not very happy tonight, but tomorrow should be a better day.

The four-time world champion also reacted to Nico Rosberg’s spectacular blowout. « Usually, the tires work well here, especially since temperatures aren’t very high. I don’t really know what happened to Nico, to be honest. Fortunately, we will use the drivers’ briefing to discuss this accident and try to explain the cause of the issue. We will look into whether it was purely his fault or if a mechanical element damaged the tire before it blew out. »

For his part, Kimi Räikkönen had better sensations. He mentioned a day that was not too bad. After securing fourth place this morning, the four-time winner at Spa finished the second free practice session in 5th position, behind the two Red Bulls nevertheless.

« Despite the red flags, we were able to complete all the planned work. » said Iceman. « Our front tires suffered a bit, which isn’t ideal, but it’s not a disaster as there are solutions to this problem. We will do our utmost for tomorrow afternoon’s qualifications: we will see at the end what we can aim for on Sunday. »

For this, the team will be able to rely on interesting data collected on a track with high temperatures, a weather condition that particularly suits the SF15-T this season.

It will therefore be particularly interesting to watch the two Ferraris from tomorrow and the qualifying session. Always well-positioned, will Sebastian Vettel manage to right the course of a lackluster weekend start? Will Kimi Räikkönen position himself well to dream of new moments of glory on the Ardennes track?
