Formula E soon in Brussels?

The Formula E promoters would like to organize a race in Brussels. While the Belgian capital remains open to the idea of hosting a race in the all-electric championship, many questions remain.

Next week will see the final round of this first season of Formula E during a double race in the streets of London. For the next season, while a race in Paris seems more and more certain, Brussels would also like to join the festivities: « The city of Brussels hosted Grand Prix races in the 40s to 60s. Obviously, we cannot imagine the same thing today, it would be frowned upon. However, developing non-polluting electric cars is more in line with current trends » explains Alain Courtois, First Alderman of the City of Brussels, in charge of sports.

Recently, the Brussels politician met with the project’s promoters: he explained that he is open to a project that is only in its early stages: « Before making a final decision, we need to see how it unfolds and what the city is being asked for. I don’t see the city spending hundreds of thousands of euros ».

Currently, no city has been mentioned to host a Formula E race. Only one criterion is considered: the track must be 2.5 kilometers long. At Cecoforma, responsible for promoting the project, the preference is for the King Baudouin Stadium: “There is enough space to set up a circuit, the area can be easily closed off, there are many parking spaces, the palaces where parallel events could be organized, and space for a big celebration,” explains Stephan Uhoda from Cecoforma. However, construction work seems to be planned for the Brussels facility starting in 2017.

Other European countries, such as Switzerland or the Netherlands, would also be interested in the prospect of hosting their own Formula E Grand Prix.
