On the lookout against his teammate in Q1 and Q2, Nico Rosberg did not seem at his best during Q3. He notably complained about his tires, which affected the good performance of his car.

« I lacked grip on the rear of my car at the start of Q3, » admitted the winner of the last Grand Prix in Monaco. « I didn’t have the grip I had on the first two sets of super-soft tires. I mainly had to adapt to the car by first adjusting my balance. »

But these last-minute adjustments didn’t really improve the situation: « That’s when I had a lot of understeer. It made me lose time! » He also wasn’t able to make significant improvements in the last stint of the session. His bad impressions were confirmed by the team: « My engineers confirmed to me that the stint with these (super-soft) tires was bad. They then suggested changing the settings. »

« It’s incredible how small details make a big difference in the end! » he conceded to reporters yesterday at the end of the session.

After this clear defeat in qualifying, Nico Rosberg now hopes to compete with his teammate and nevertheless rival in the race: « This race will be long and full of difficulties. There are overtaking opportunities here, so I’m looking forward to the Grand Prix with anticipation and in a positive spirit. »

He will have to face a rejuvenated Lewis Hamilton. The World Champion was able to express his full potential this time, after a last free practice session where he didn’t achieve a significant time. He is back in the spotlight despite an error in his second Q3 run: « The last free practice session was frustrating because I couldn’t achieve a good time, so I went into qualifying a bit in the dark with my settings. But the car performed very well, and the team did a superb job, especially after Friday night’s practice sessions. »

He truly savors this pole position in Quebec: « Getting a new pole here, especially the 44th, [a number that is also on his car] is something very special for me. »

When it comes to the race, caution is advised regarding Ferrari: « Ferrari seems to have a very good race pace; they are constantly improving, which forces us to push harder and harder. But I hope we will be at the top for the race. »
