Merhi: I need sponsors to continue

This Sunday, Roberto Merhi will make his debut in the premier category of motorsport. An adventure that could quickly come to an end if the Spanish driver does not find financial backing soon.

Placed under judicial administration during the winter, Marussia managed to convince new investors to return to the starting grids of the Formula 1 World Championship.

If Will Stevens was quickly confirmed, having made his F1 debut in Abu Dhabi, Roberto Merhi had to wait until the final days before the race weekend in Melbourne to know if he would participate in his first Grand Prix. An opportunity that the Spaniard managed to seize, even though he knows it will be challenging to keep his seat under the current circumstances.

« For the moment, we don’t know how long I will have the wheel, » explains Merhi to the Spanish radio station Cadena Cope. « We will see how the first races go. I’m focusing on the race this weekend; I’m not yet thinking about what will happen afterwards. »

For the moment, I am their driver and we will see if it’s for the whole season or not. It’s a team that doesn’t have a big budget and they need a paying driver. There’s nothing I can do about it since I don’t have a sponsor. I hope this race will help me find one. If I want to continue, I need a sponsor, but in Spain it’s hard to find support.

Before signing with Manor Marussia, Roberto Merhi had committed to Pons Racing in Formula Renault 3.5, a championship in which he had finished third last year.
