Carlos Sainz: My son made it to F1 thanks to his talent
Carlos Sainz Sr reflects on his son's appointment at Toro Rosso, which he believes is solely due to his talent, following his title in Formula Renault 3.5, among other achievements. The young Spanish driver will be one of the three rookies of the 2015 season alongside Max Verstappen and Felipe Nasr.
If McLaren will field the most experienced pair on the grid – with Alonso and Button, Toro Rosso will field the youngest pair of drivers with Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz.
For *Marca*, Carlos Sainz Sr – double world rally champion – reflects on his son’s appointment in Formula 1 with the Italian team thanks to Red Bull’s support: « There were times when his last name opened doors for him. Only when you reach F1, it’s not because of your last name, but because of your talent. Today, he is part of the Red Bull Junior Team. It’s a team that takes a lot of data into account [to judge its drivers]. »
The Spanish veteran, currently participating in the Dakar with Peugeot, reflects on his son’s season and believes he will have to work constantly to achieve his goals: « My son is very young, but he won the previous championship in Formula Renault 3.5 with very good results. I believe he is ready to do excellent work, he has exceptional talent, and I hope he can demonstrate it. I say all this because I’ve seen him participate for half of the season. He has achieved an important dream; reaching F1 is difficult, but the hardest part is staying there. Therefore, he will have to work very hard, with humility, and he must be attentive. »
As a father, Carlos Sainz doesn’t have many tips to pass on to his son: « I experience all this with great intensity, but I try to hold myself back, I don’t have many tips to give him because he knows more than I do. »
