Hamilton hopes to be in F1 for another 7 years
Lewis Hamilton has clinched the honorary title of Sports Personality of the Year in the UK and expressed on this occasion his desire to race in Formula 1 for many more years.
After winning the F1 world championship title, Lewis Hamilton recently clinched the BBC Sport Personality of the Year award. The Mercedes driver surpassed golfer Rory McIlroy and athlete Jo Pavey.
He told BBC Sport during the ceremony about his desire to continue in Formula 1 for many more years: « I feel like I can do another seven years in F1. That’s the goal. I clinched the first title in 2008 and now a second title, so the sky is the limit for me now. I just have to keep moving forward. »
If Hamilton continues to race in F1 for another 7 years, he will then be 36, a perfectly acceptable age – Kimi Räikkönen being 35 and Michael Schumacher having ended his career at the age of 43 and Rubens Barrichello at the age of 39, notably.
With potentially another 7 years of F1 ahead of him, Hamilton could match the number of world titles of his idol, Ayrton Senna (3 titles), and perhaps even Alain Prost (4 titles). Fangio (5 titles) and Schumacher (7 titles) are still far off, but with the current domination of the Mercedes AMG F1 team, nothing should be ruled out.
