Button assures that he can refuse an offer from McLaren F1

Jenson Button does not yet know what his year 2015 will look like, but he hopes to continue with McLaren in F1. He does not rule out leaving even if the British team decides to offer him a new contract.

As Fernando Alonso seems increasingly close to signing with the McLaren F1 team, for now, no information has leaked about who might accompany him at the wheel of a McLaren-Honda in 2015. However, Jenson Button’s chances of being retained appear to be diminishing.

Eric Boullier has repeatedly stated that the McLaren team was at a turning point and needed to carefully choose its drivers for the next year in order to start a new cycle. And who better than a young wolf to embody the team in the long run, and at 34, Button does not have the age advantage over Kevin Magnussen, 22.

When asked if he would accept a new contract from McLaren, the Briton was rather vague: “That’s a good question I can’t answer right now. When you are put in a position that many drivers have experienced in recent years, when you are not sure if your contract will be renewed, it opens your eyes to different challenges and other possibilities. Whether it’s competition, whether it’s doing another sport, or whether it’s something completely different.”

For me, I am excited about the challenges that lie ahead. There are many things I am passionate about, and I have many ideas for my future, whether it’s next year or the year after. It’s an important part of my life, Formula 1 and motorsport. It has been and it won’t stop, it will continue, it’s just that I don’t know where it will happen.

If the 2009 world champion is not retained by McLaren, he will not seek to stay in F1 at all costs because he wants to have a competitive car to fight at the front and not just make up the numbers: « If I am in Formula 1, I want to win. I’ve had enough [races] without winning since I won my world championship, so I have no interest in racing in Formula 1 unless I’m fighting at the front. If I had a seat that gives me the opportunity to win, then obviously, I think all drivers would be interested. But I’m not here just to run 20 races and score points. »
