Saturday: Magnussen and Button in a good position for McLaren at Spa
Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button managed to qualify for Q3 despite having setups planned for dry conditions and tomorrow's race. The Dane managed things better and will start in 7th position. The Brit damaged his tires on his fast lap and couldn't improve during his second run, placing 10th on the grid.

Kevin Magnussen (#20) – 12th and 7th
The Dane managed to qualify for Q3, the last part of the qualifications, but it wasn’t easy for him: « The conditions were extremely difficult today. In fact, I almost didn’t make it to Q2 because I flat-spotted both my front tires at turn 1 of my first lap, so I had a lot of understeer and couldn’t attack. But, despite that, I managed to get through, so everything was fine. I then managed to get through to Q2, and Q3 went well, too. I put in a good lap and felt good with the car. »
Magnussen hopes for a competitive race in dry conditions tomorrow, which could allow him to score big points for McLaren: « The 7th position may not be a fantastic result, but it is not a bad starting position for tomorrow’s race. I cannot express how much I love driving here. It’s truly amazing to drive on this circuit in any race car. It’s a lot of fun and hopefully tomorrow we can achieve what we want, which is to get a good result and score some points. »
Jenson Button (No. 22) – 8th and 10th
The Briton made a mistake on his flying lap, which explains his last place in Q3: « My first run in Q3 was good. But on my second run, with new intermediates, in slightly drier conditions, I locked my wheels at the top of the hill – and as soon as you lock your wheels, it’s really over. I continued, but my lap was done. I tried to keep going, but I was 1.5 seconds behind, so I couldn’t catch up. That should have been the run to achieve the lap time I wanted, but it wasn’t the case, which is a shame. »
Even though Button is one of the best in wet and changing conditions, he hopes for a dry race tomorrow.
