While some teams continue to develop their single-seater, Mercedes will try in Spain to widen the gap over its rivals.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are in a league of their own at the start of this season. With 3 wins for the Briton and only one for the German, the management of the Anglo-German team is clear about the fact that Mercedes can still widen the gap with the competition.

Toto Wolff in Autosport explains that staying just ahead will not be enough if developments are not made on the car: « Our goal must be to increase the advantage we gained in the last race in China. We have already seen that our competitors are relentless in their efforts to close the gap. We are a team, it is up to us to meet this challenge in the development race. If we want to build a sustained level of success in this sport, even a slight advantage, we must work constantly to gain a big advantage over our competitors. »

However Wolff has long believed that Mercedes’ advantage in the world championship was significant as some suggested, but ultimately it would not be so important.

Toto Wolff had spoken after the Chinese Grand Prix, still on the Autosport website: “I think it’s an exceptional race and we can’t take everything for granted. In a few years, we’ll look back and say it was really great to win four races in a row, including three consecutive one-two finishes. But we have to stay grounded and focus on developing the car.”

« Our competitors were very strong in China, Fernando Alonso in the 1st and 2nd relays, as well as Daniel Ricciardo throughout the race. Mistakes happen in F1, it’s hard to overtake, so when you make a mistake, you can quickly find yourself in an uncomfortable situation and see your lead melt in the world championship, » added the Austrian.
