Sunday: Chilton saves Marussia’s weekend

Despite a collision with Pastor Maldonado for which he received a pit-lane penalty, Max Chilton enabled Marussia to get ahead of Caterham on the streets of Monaco. Jules Bianchi, on the other hand, experienced a race that ended at Sainte-Dévote after a brake disc failure right from the start.

Max Chilton – 14th:

Overall, I am satisfied with my positive end to the race after what has been a difficult weekend for us. I fought hard in the last laps of the race to ensure we had something good to take away from Monaco and, naturally, I am very happy to have been able to pass Van der Garde for 14th place in the penultimate lap. Regarding the incident with Pastor [Maldonado], Esteban [Gutiérrez] missed the chicane, and I had to take action to avoid him, which meant I had to cut the chicane. I exited turn 11 with the inside of turn 12 approaching quickly. I knew there was someone behind me but not alongside. The stewards deemed it deserved a drive-through penalty, and I accept this decision. After the race, I went to see Pastor to check if he was okay. The accident made the rest of the race difficult, but all I could do was focus on the best result for the team and, problems aside, I think we can be satisfied with the final result.

Jules Bianchi – Withdrawal:

« After a tough weekend here in Monaco, I was hoping we could have the opportunity to turn things around during the race, but it wasn’t meant to be, unfortunately. On the starting grid, I encountered an electrical problem and couldn’t select gears, so I had to start from the pit lane. It was frustrating, but at least I could start. Quite early in the race, I was with Max but had to think about preserving my tires and hope the race would turn in my favor. After Maldonado hit the barrier in the accident with Max, the safety wall came down on me, and my nose was damaged, so I had just pitted when the red flag was issued. I was lucky that the damage was limited to the nose and I could continue the race. After that, I was just trying to bring the car to the finish, but I suffered a failure of my front right brake disc, which put me out of the race at Sainte-Dévote. It’s a real shame, but I’m sure we learned a lot from some of the issues we faced this weekend. »
