Hamilton and Alonso were the highest-paid drivers in 2013

As every year, the Business Book GP publishes the incomes of Formula 1 drivers and, for the first time in three seasons, Fernando Alonso is no longer alone at the top of this ranking. The Spaniard was well ahead in 2012—with estimated earnings of 30 million euros—but Lewis Hamilton, thanks to his transfer to Mercedes and a decrease in the Ferrari driver’s income, joins him with each earning 20 million euros.

Reminder, the income of the two men is equivalent to the salaries of 1,165 French people paid at the minimum wage, the amount of the minimum wage in 2013 being €1,430.22 gross per month (or €17,162 annually).

However, it should be noted that this ranking only takes into account the salaries of the drivers paid by the teams. Advertising and ancillary revenues have not been included.

On the side of the reigning triple world champion, Sebastian Vettel, a “slight” increase is to be noted (12 million compared to 10 in 2012), which breaks the salary equality between the two Red Bull drivers, just as Nico Rosberg receives one million more than in 2012. The move from Sauber to McLaren allowed Sergio Pérez to triple his salary, from 500,000 to 1.5 million euros, while allowing the British team to save a substantial amount on the remuneration of the two drivers. Felipe Massa, for his part, had to agree to a salary cut of four million euros to keep his seat.

On the side of Kimi Räikkönen, the report shows a decrease in salary from 5 to 3 million since last season, but specifies that a bonus of €40,000 per point scored is granted to him (which has already earned him, over the first four races of the season, €2,680,000).
