Abu Dhabi F2 Grand Prix: Jack Doohan on pole ahead of Victor Martins

The last Formula 2 weekend takes place at the same time as the last Formula 1 weekend. The stakes are still high as Théo Pourchaire could be crowned F2 champion. He is only 14th in qualifying, a session dominated by Alpine Academy drivers, with Jack Doohan on pole and Victor Martins in second place.

This morning, several Formula 2 drivers were driving Formula 1 cars as part of the mandatory young driver tests for each F1 car during the season. Théo Pourchaire drove the Alfa Romeo and had to transition to F2 qualifications just a few minutes later. The French driver still needs to secure the championship title this weekend, which is far from guaranteed.

Théo Pourchaire, before the two F2 races, is 25 points ahead of his second-placed rival, Frederik Vesti. The total points distributed during a F2 weekend are 10 points on Saturday and 26 points on Sunday. If Pourchaire fails to score any points, it is still very much possible for Vesti to win the title.

The pressure is therefore on the shoulders of the French driver, who seems to be feeling it with a poor performance in qualifying, recording the 14th best time.

The poleman is another driver who drove in the Formula 1 practices this morning. This is the Australian driver and son of the MotoGP rider, Jack Doohan. He will start in front of Victor Martins, both of them being part of the Alpine program.

Kush Maini sets the third fastest time ahead of Maloney. Iwasa, who is third in the championship, sets the fifth fastest time. Frederik Vesti only sets the ninth fastest time. He will therefore start 2nd on the grid for race 1, the sprint race, on Saturday. He will be well placed to score points, unlike Théo Pourchaire and therefore put a little more pressure on the leader of the standings.
