Schumacher: “Lewis Hamilton is the right choice”

If some might have thought that Mercedes had forced Michael Schumacher to retire, the seven-time German world champion insists on affirming the contrary. Moreover, he believes that recruiting Lewis Hamilton to replace him in 2013 was the right choice to make.

Michael Schumacher made it clear that Mercedes did not force him to retire, but that it was indeed a personal choice. He stated in an interview with the German daily *Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung*: « The Mercedes officials have let me know several times that they wanted to continue working with me after this season. They didn’t want a commitment for just one year, but rather for two. »

But the seven-time world champion no longer had the motivation to continue his adventure in Formula 1 with the star firm, especially for a two-year contract: « With that in mind, even for a year, it would have been very hard. Unconsciously, I have therefore been preparing myself for this retirement for several months. »

Michael Schumacher is even eager to retire, as he readily admits: “I can’t wait to retire. I want to say it. Given the circumstances, I’ve made the right decision. These last three years have taught me a lot. I’ve approached Formula 1 from a different perspective, I’ve developed personally.”

Moreover, the German driver fully understands Mercedes’ decision to have signed a driver like Lewis Hamilton. An opportunity that, according to him, should not be missed: « Honestly, if you can sign Hamilton for Mercedes, you have to do it. I would have done the same. Lewis [Hamilton] is the right choice. »

Now, the former Red Baron feels more at ease than during his first retirement at the end of the 2006 season: « I am more open and relaxed. I can let go because I feel freer. »
