What’s life like as a Formula 1 driver?

Jean-Eric Vergne: « It’s pretty great. We travel a lot, see amazing things, and meet many different people. Plus, it’s cool to have the job I’ve always dreamed of doing. »

Do you feel a difference in F1 compared to the lower categories?

The media coverage changes a lot. There are expectations, the pressure to succeed. For a young person like me, it’s great to arrive in Formula 1. But I’m not sure I will stay there.

Is Daniel Ricciardo nice? Do you have friendly relations? Cordial?

Relations are rather cordial because he remains my main rival. Everything is going very well. We get along very well. We both have an interest in working together to improve the car. There is always a rivalry with your teammate. First, you want to beat him to access a better team. Then, once you have a better car, you want to beat him to become world champion.

What are your long-term goals? Maybe driving a Red Bull one day?

« I am not thinking about driving the Red Bull for the moment. »

Maybe you prefer to keep an open mind to all opportunities?

Closed, rather. I am focused on Toro Rosso.

Would that represent an achievement to drive the Austrian single-seater?

« For me, the ultimate achievement would be to become the world champion. »

And your relationship with Romain Grosjean and Charles Pic? Is there a kind of patriotic solidarity between you?

« We have a good relationship. But we don’t see each other much at the Grand Prix, we lack free time. »

Last question … Do you have an idol?

« I don’t know, I have several examples. Okay, if I have to choose one, it would be Senna I think. »

Why Ayrton Senna in particular?

« Do I really have to explain why? I have my reasons, like everyone else. »
