It was a bad Thursday in the world of motorsport. After about ten minutes of laps, the practice session was interrupted. The reason: the detachment of a manhole cover, causing significant damage to Carlos Sainz’s race car.

Following this problem, all the drainage vents were blocked with sand and asphalt by the workers. As a result, there was a delay of 2 hours and 30 minutes for the second practice session.

No ticket refunds

If the EL2 sessions were able to take place “normally”, spectators were not able to attend. The format lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes, local time. Due to labor laws and logistical constraints, Formula 1 fans were directed towards the exit. For what was supposed to be the highlight of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the beginning of the show was limited to 10 minutes due to issues…

In the face of this situation, Formula 1, specifically Stefano Domenicali, has issued a statement to justify their decision. However, without apologizing to its audience, the officials have informed that owners of a day pass will simply not be refunded. These motorsport enthusiasts will receive a compensation of $200 (€183.20) to spend at the event’s shop.

There is no higher priority in a Formula 1 race than the safety and security of the drivers, fans, and staff, said the daily ticket holders. Following yesterday evening’s incident, the F1 and FIA had to make the difficult decision to close the fan areas before the start of Free Practice 2. We appreciate your patience as we resolve the situation. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. As a token of gratitude for your support, we would like to offer you a $200 voucher to the official Grand Prix of Las Vegas store. With a full set of successful practices completed, we are looking forward to providing everyone with a safe and entertaining race weekend.

Logistics issues

The director of the Grand Prix also commented on the decision made. She notably justified the departure of the spectators at 1:30 am. First of all, we were concerned about our public safety and security officials, explains Renee Wilm. Secondly, we were concerned about our transportation employees who are responsible for taking our fans back to the hotels. Finally, our hospitality staff needed to be able to clean and restock our guest areas.

Renee Wilm also drew a parallel with other events organized in the city of “vice.” « We know that it was disappointing », admitted the director. « We have all attended events, such as concerts, matches, and even other Formula 1 races, that have been cancelled due to factors such as weather or technical issues. It happens, and we hope that people will understand. »

If no additional problem arises, the Sunday race will take place at 7 o’clock, French time.
