Threats force organizers to scale back festivities in Canada
The organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix have decided to cancel the open house day initially planned for this Thursday following announced disruption threats.
The threat of protests announced on Canadian soil is also weighing on the Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1, which is set to take place this weekend. The revolt of Canadian students (or the Maple Spring) who are protesting against tuition fees, could therefore have repercussions on the organization of the Grand Prix.
That’s why the organizers decided to cancel the open day scheduled for this Thursday, which would have allowed spectators to access the paddock and pit lane to meet the drivers and team members.
A statement further specifies: « After a serious examination of the situation, made necessary by the threats of public disturbances and the difficulty of accurately measuring their validity, the organizers have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to restrict access to the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit and specifically to the pit lane, on the day before the first sessions. »
After the announced threat from the Anonymous group, the Canadian Grand Prix seems to be taking place in a rather tense context this year.
