Mick Schumacher has to settle for a reserve seat. The German driver no longer holds a regular position at the end of the 2022 season. The 24-year-old athlete was not extended by Haas due to deemed insufficient results. For 2023, it is Nico Hülkenberg, former reserve driver for Aston Martin, who replaced him.

When he was available, Mercedes took the opportunity to sign him as a reserve driver. However, in 2023, he did not participate in any races or sessions.

No opportunities in 2023

When his contract with Haas ended, the German driver looked for a new way out. However, no main seat was offered to the Formula 2 Champion of 2020. Unfortunately, there were no opportunities to drive, but I have always had a very good relationship with Mercedes and I am happy to be part of the program, said Mick Schumacher in the columns of Tuttomotoriweb. This year, it is the first time since I started racing that I am not participating in professional competitions. However, I am gaining a lot of experience here within the Mercedes team. I am learning a lot, on many aspects, and I am growing a lot, so I really appreciate the opportunity that has been given to me. I am looking forward to the next possibilities that could come my way in the future.

Despite his reserve status, Schumacher is determined to reclaim a prominent position in Formula 1. In 2025, several athletes will be out of contract, reshuffling the cards. The arrival of Audi in 2026 could also offer him an opportunity. Sauber will certainly want to integrate a German driver, providing Mick with a possibility. « For now, I have to see the options that will be created in the future », he stated. « We will have to see for the 2025 season. My goal is definitely to come back to racing in F1 in a way that must be seen, and I hope it will be something special too. »

Schumacher does not exclude any competition

Mick Schumacher is aware that Formula 1 is very selective. There is nothing to exclude the possibility that the driver ends up in another championship. The WEC takes a different approach, explained the son of the Red Baron. It is a race that lasts 24 hours. Of course, you share the cockpit with two other drivers. It’s about racing, but racing.

However, the former Haas driver is categorical. He will not race in Formula E. “I will be very honest and tell you no,” he said. “I love engines, I love gasoline, so definitely not that. Who knows what awaits us in the future. Who knows, maybe by driving it, I could even change my expectations. I love old-school cars, V8s, the smells, the flames, and everything else. That’s what interests me.”

His reservist contract extended until 2023. Mick Schumacher should be free in 2024.
