Stefano Domenicali ready to make changes to the sprint format
The format of Sprint races could evolve for the next season. Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1 and his teams must discuss the different proposals during the upcoming meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Since its introduction in 2021, the Sprint format has evolved every year. Initially, only the top three scored points, with three points for the first, two for the second, and one for the third, and the format was called the “Sprint qualifying” because the order of this qualifying determined the starting grid for the Sunday race.
In 2022, the number of drivers earning points reached up to the 8th place. But the winner of this sprint started in first place the following day. This year, two qualifying sessions were created for Sprint weekends. The traditional qualification takes place on Friday, after the only practice session, and determines the grid order for the Sunday race. And the “Sprint Shootout” on Saturday morning, which defines the order for the Saturday afternoon Sprint race.
Andrea Stella, the team director of McLaren F1 Team, asserts that the attractiveness of Formula 1 has in no way diminished since the introduction of sprint races in 2021.
Various ideas put on the table
Different proposals will be heard by Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1, and the members of the disciplinary committee, during the next meeting in Abu Dhabi. « We have our feelers in all directions when it comes to making our sport more attractive. We must try new formats and remain open to everything. This is particularly true when it comes to the theme of sustainability. There are still a few details to work out, but overall, it was good », said Stefano Domenicali during a press conference. Among the proposals mentioned, we can mention potential reverse grids, a separate sprint championship, or even sprint race prizes.
