We remember the controversy sparked by the presence of the Bahrain Grand Prix at the opening of the 2011 Formula 1 season.

The kingdom, shaken by a revolt of its people following the movements of the Arab countries last spring, did not seem rightly able to host any sporting event, and thus the grand circus of Formula 1.

Bernie Ecclestone, in agreement with the crown prince of the kingdom, had decided to cancel the race late, while hoping throughout the year to reschedule the Grand Prix for a later date. This ultimately never happened.

On the other hand, the crown prince managed to convince Ecclestone that his country would be ready to host Formula 1 once again in 2012, and the race was therefore scheduled for April 22.

However, for the past few days, Bahrain has been the scene of violent protests during which a young man was killed and another seriously injured. According to the newspaper Le Figaro: “The government reported an ambush on Friday by protesters against a police patrol, during which Molotov cocktails were used, and the authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of 11 ‘saboteurs’ linked to this incident.”

Informed of the unstable situation within the kingdom, Bernie Ecclestone stated: “There is clearly a problem,” but the Briton nevertheless hopes that the race will take place in April.

Is Bahrain capable of hosting a Grand Prix on its soil in 2012? The question, both technically and morally, remains open, and Formula 1 might find itself in a predicament similar to last year’s.
