Like Mercedes and Renault, Ferrari is working on a Turbo V6 engine to comply with the new engine regulations that will govern Formula 1 from 2014. The Italian automaker is expected to conduct the first tests of this new unit by the summer of 2012, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

Like its rivals, the Maranello firm is working on a 1.6L V6 Turbo to comply with the new regulations. But the team, and especially its boss Luca di Montezemolo, hopes that the regulations will consider the technological aspect in F1 more, to allow Ferrari to transfer certain technologies to its road cars.

He also criticized on this point, in the German press, the Red Bull Racing team, which according to him only uses Formula 1 to promote its brand globally, while the car manufacturers present in F1—Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Marussia to a lesser extent—use this sport to develop technologies that will later be used in their “everyday” cars.

« Sport should be a laboratory for technology rather than just a marketing tool for sponsors who own a team, » said di Montezemolo as quoted by Die Welt.
