A revised front wing for Ferrari in Abu Dhabi

The Scuderia Ferrari introduced a new front wing during the South Korean Grand Prix. It was then tested in India by both team drivers, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. This new wing has provided a noticeable performance gain over several races according to Pat Fry, the technical director of the Italian team.

I think the biggest improvement in terms of performance made during the last races is the new front wing that we tested for the first time in Korea. We then fitted it on both our cars in India, Pat Fry stated on the Ferrari website.

This is an interesting development for us, as it changes the characteristics of the car and trying to understand how to get the maximum out of it is clearly an interesting challenge, and in the short term, it has helped us from a performance point of view.

But this wing did not go unnoticed, especially on Massa’s car, because it scraped at the end of the straight line. However, according to Fry, this issue is related to the quality of materials and not to the design of the wing itself. Therefore, things should return to normal this weekend for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

« We had some quality issues with one of the wings used in India but this solution will be back in Abu Dhabi, even though after seeing the behavior during the last race, work has been done to modify some aspects of this wing before our two drivers use it again this weekend, » added Fry.

For several months now, Ferrari had been trying to understand the functioning of Red Bull’s flexible front wing, and the team seems to have chosen the right direction for their 2012 car.
