Saturday: Williams chose to keep their new tires

It was a more than disappointing qualifying session for the Williams team today in South Korea, but the British team had decided to preserve as many new tires as possible to have an aggressive strategy in the race. It remains to be seen if this will pay off tomorrow in the race, as both drivers will start from very far back - Maldonado is 16th and Barrichello 18th.

Rubens Barrichello – 18th and 18th

«My first lap in Q1 was quite good but my tires started to degrade on the third lap. As we had decided to preserve the tires before the session began, we ended this stint and I came back in. We did what was best today considering the current performance of our car.»

Pastor Maldonado – 17th and 16th

I didn’t drive much with little fuel this morning, only four laps, and this track isn’t easy, especially sectors 2 and 3. I think I did some good laps during the qualifying session, both in Q1 and Q2. We are a bit too far from the top 10, so we need to keep working. Tomorrow is another day and we will have a lot of new tires, which is important for our strategy.

Mark Gillan – Chief Engineer

The third free practice session went smoothly for our two cars, which focused on gathering as much data as possible for the race with the soft and super soft tires. It was very important because we couldn’t run in the dry yesterday. No one is happy with our qualifying performance and we are aware that we need to continue improving by the end of the season. As a team, we are working very hard to understand the areas where we need to focus to speed up the development process and improve the car’s performance.
