Former Scuderia Ferrari engineer, Aldo Costa was let go by the Italian team at the beginning of the season due to a blatant lack of results.

He did not have to wait long to find a place in Formula 1 as Mercedes GP recruited him to be part of its new technical team alongside Ross Brawn and Geoff Willis, who was also recently hired by the German firm.

Even though he had considered other career paths outside of Formula 1, Costa says he is very happy to continue the adventure within this discipline: “I am enthusiastic. Mercedes works very hard to win, and this philosophy entirely aligns with my ambitions and character. Yes, I considered the possibility of doing something else outside of car racing. But as soon as it was possible to return with Mercedes, I did not hesitate. I met with Ross Brawn and Bob Bell at the end of my commitment with Ferrari, and a few words were enough to convince me.”

Costa is also very excited about working again with Michael Schumacher, whom he had worked with during the German’s golden era at Ferrari in the 2000s: «I haven’t spoken to Michael yet, but it won’t be long. No one is as good as he is at interpreting a car and its development. He will be fundamental, and I firmly believe in his driving as well. I don’t agree with the accusations against him.»

The engineer, however, has no regrets or animosity towards Ferrari, who dismissed him during the year: “These are things that happen in sports and in life. The idea of competing against Ferrari is exciting, even though I still have many friends on the other side!”
