Liuzzi blames Kovalainen for the first corner crash at Monza
Vitantonio Liuzzi lost control of his HRT yesterday at the start of the first corner of the Italian Grand Prix. He ended up colliding with other competitors, Vitaly Petrov and Nico Rosberg. Even though the Italian driver apologized to both men, he found a scapegoat for his mishap in the person of Heikki Kovalainen.

Vitantonio Liuzzi made quite a spectacle at the first corner of the Italian Grand Prix yesterday. However, the HRT driver believes he is not entirely responsible for what happened. He explained that it was because Heikki Kovalainen forced him onto the grass that he lost control, subsequently hitting Vitaly Petrov’s LRGP and Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes GP.
« It’s a shame and I apologized to (Nico) Rosberg and (Vitaly) Petrov, but it wasn’t my fault because I was pushed into the grass by Kovalainen. And once I was in the grass, I completely lost control of the car and that’s why it happened (the accident) », Vitantonio Liuzzi told Autosport.
« I moved to Kovalainen’s right and he squeezed me onto the grass, and at that moment, I was already in my braking zone. I tried to brake but obviously I had no grip and that’s why I lost the car ».
Even though Liuzzi feels that Kovalainen is partly responsible for the accident, he is not certain of anything because he had not yet been able to review a replay, particularly to check if the Finnish driver himself had been forced to swerve due to another driver.
« I think that if Kovalainen hadn’t closed the door, we probably could have made it through because I think there was enough room. But I want to see the replays first because someone told me that he had been squeezed too, but what’s certain is that he squeezed me, and I found myself on the grass. But it is clear that it could have been avoided », added the Italian driver.
