Michael Schumacher will consider his future

In difficulty since his return in 2010, the seven-time World Champion seems increasingly inclined to question his future while he still has a year left on his contract with Mercedes GP.

When Michael Schumacher returned to Formula 1 at the beginning of 2010, there was strong hope of seeing him compete with the best. Behind the wheel of a car, the successor of the Brawn BGP 001, the reigning world champion, how could one not imagine that the seven-time champion would often be on the podium? But there it was. A car that was ultimately not very competitive, far from the promised potential, and a team unable to implement the improvements needed to catch up with the top teams, dashed those hopes.

A fourth place in thirty races. It’s the best result for someone who, for many years, monopolized the F1 titles, building the most impressive record in the history of the sport. It doesn’t take more for some observers to see this as the decline of the Mercedes driver, often forgetting that the machine he operates is far from delivering full satisfaction to both the Mercedes team itself and the Silver Arrows fans.

Despite everything, rare are the sessions during which he outpaces his teammate, Nico Rosberg. Disappointed by his results, Schumacher still wants to remind everyone of the reasons for his arrival: I joined Mercedes with a specific task: not to win at all costs, but to improve the team. We are working very hard, the car is in its second year and there are still many areas of uncertainty, but it will grow.

The German doesn’t avoid his personal case: « If there is anything, I am the problem: it’s a fact that I am a bit more relaxed than before. I have experience, I know when it’s necessary to be focused. But I don’t know if my mindset is good for the team. In some time, we will evaluate whether to continue or stop F1 ». Statements that are at least sincere.

On Ross Brawn’s side, the door remains wide open if “Schumi” decides to leave on his own accord: « We brought Schumacher into our team with the mission of developing the car. He has a three-year contract and we are happy with him. But if Schumacher no longer feels comfortable, then we need to talk. You can’t force someone to do something they don’t want to do ».

The director of the star team still wants to believe: « We believe in him, he is an important member of the team. Nico Rosberg is the best teammate Michael has ever had. But Rosberg is from another generation: we need someone who knows how to develop the car without electronic sensors, the old-fashioned way. Even if Michael is 42, he can learn from Nico and find great satisfaction in it. I’m sure he will complete his contract ».
