Ferrari drops Marlboro from its official name

Less than a month after signing a new $480 million contract for three years, Ferrari has just decided, on the occasion of the Silverstone Grand Prix, to drop the Marlboro name from its name. The official name of the team is now simply Scuderia Ferrari.

However, nothing will change on the Red cars since Marlboro was already not part of the sponsors present on the cars of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

But this news means that there is no longer a single element of communication linking Ferrari and Marlboro. While other teams try to multiply small sponsor logos on their cars to fill their coffers, Ferrari can afford the luxury of displaying very few.

Philip Morris and Ferrari have responded to recent concerns regarding the official team name and have decided, with immediate and worldwide effect, that “Marlboro” will no longer be part of the official name. Even though we do not agree with the concerns raised, our decision was made in our tradition of addressing such issues to avoid unnecessary and non-productive debates, explains the communications manager of Scuderia, Luca Colajanni.

It remains to be seen what fate awaits the new logo designed by the Scuderia, which some think strangely resembles a pack from the famous cigarette manufacturer… But so far, no authority has found anything to object to, even though the said logo has never been as present on the cars, suits, and helmets of the drivers.
