Sunday: Feeling of bad luck at Ferrari

After excellent qualifiers, the Italian team was unable to convert that into a good result.

Felipe Massa – 6th

I cannot be satisfied with this sixth place, given the potential we demonstrated here. My chances of finishing on the podium and fighting for the victory vanished when I tried to overtake Karthikeyan: he was going very slowly on the dry line, but when I wanted to pass him, he accelerated and I lost control of the car. Thanks to the following safety car, I was able to catch up with the pack and, in the end, overtook a few cars to finish 6th. I am angry, there is no point in denying it. We qualified and were in the top three until the red flag. What happened, happened, and it’s all over. I am happy with the car’s performance, both with the wet tires and the slicks. With the intermediates, however, I struggled. We will now go to Valencia, where we can be competitive, as the characteristics of the track are similar to those in Montreal. We will have the medium tires that we were able to test here on Friday: we will see what level of grip they will give us.

Fernando Alonso – Retirement

« Nothing went right from this morning when we saw it was raining. We had achieved the best qualification of the year and started behind the safety car. I felt that intermediate tires would be the best for me. Then, when we put them on, the deluge hit, along with the red flag, meaning that those who hadn’t pitted could change their tires without losing anything. To top it off, there was the collision with Button that left me stuck on top of a curb, unable to restart. It’s really unfortunate because today we had a really good race pace but were unlucky: that’s not a feeling, it’s a fact. When you don’t score points, you must immediately turn the page and look toward the next race. I think we can do well in Valencia as it’s another circuit that should suit our car. The championship is not over yet, but now, we have to wait for mistakes from others to keep hope alive. Our performance level was good here, due to the circuit’s characteristics, but also thanks to the improvements we brought here. We must keep our heads high, trust in our capabilities, and work hard. »

One could say that it was a rather chaotic race, from which we did not leave with what was within our reach. The events certainly did not play in our favor, starting with the weather: today, given what we saw in qualifying, we could have fought for the victory, even in dry conditions. During the first part of the race, both drivers had completely different feelings with their cars: for Fernando, the intermediates were faster, and that motivated our decision to mount them. Then it began to rain heavily, and the red flag appeared. Now, we must look to the future and leave this race behind us as quickly as possible, without getting discouraged. The team worked well in very difficult conditions. From a performance point of view, this weekend, we saw that the gap with the fastest car seems to have narrowed. Unfortunately, we could not take advantage of that today. We must move forward and continue the path of improving the car: sooner or later, the results will come.
