Sunday: Ferrari climbs one more step

A week after being lapped by Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso finished close behind him in Monaco, leaving the principality with a 2nd place finish, his best result of the season after the podium in Turkey. Massa, on the other hand, saw his race end prematurely after a collision with Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso – 2nd

« This is my best result of the year and I think it’s very important, especially for the team. We needed a podium, we had to fight until the end for this victory. Of course, it’s an atypical circuit and we shouldn’t draw conclusions from a race that always has its own story. We need to close the gap with the best: in Canada, we will have some new features on the car and we hope they will prove useful.

I had a good start: if there had been a bit more space, maybe I could have done the same as in Spain.

Then, I tried to preserve my tires before attacking Vettel at the end of my stint, but then the red flag came out and it was over, because with new tires, he was impossible to beat.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens all the time here and adds to the charm of this Grand Prix. We must congratulate ourselves on this result and look forward with confidence to Montreal and Valencia, two races where we performed well last year.

The gap in the championship is very significant, but the road remains long.

Felipe Massa – Retirement

I’m really disappointed with the way my race ended. After Hamilton tried to overtake me at Loews – which is impossible to do here –, hitting me and pushing me onto Webber, the car wasn’t working as well, and I couldn’t drive it properly anymore, which is why he got me on the inside, in the tunnel. I found myself on the dirty side of the track and ended up in the barrier.

I got off to a good start, but at the first corner, I found Webber and Fernando in front of me: I was on the outside and Rosberg was able to pass in front of me. That’s how I missed the right train that would have allowed me to stay with the leaders, while I lost too much time behind the German’s Mercedes.

Today, we were competitive and, given how things turned out, I could have finished 4th.

Now, we are heading to Canada where we hope to have a car that allows us to fight as we did here. Having the same two types of tires as here is definitely a positive point for us.

« If we had been told before this weekend that we would finish second, eleven-tenths behind the winner, I would have signed up on the spot, but we cannot deny that there is a lingering sense of regret. Fernando was fantastic all weekend and fought for the victory until the final meters today.

Vettel did not steal his victory, but there is no doubt that the red flag deprived our driver of the opportunity to attack in the final laps. […]

There are more regrets for Felipe, who was also capable of finishing well […].

Only a week has passed since we took a lap on the Circuit de Catalunya, and we saw how things could change quickly depending on the track characteristics and the type of tires we use.

Clearly, the situation in both championships is becoming more and more difficult, but we are not giving up on anything: we are going to two circuits where, on paper, we should be competitive and then, by the summer break, we will see where we stand.
