Silverstone inaugurates its new paddock

Spectators at the next British Grand Prix will be able to see the impact of the 17-year contract signed with Bernie Ecclestone in December 2009: Silverstone has just inaugurated its new paddock, which is expected to make the circuit one of the best in the world.

To celebrate the completion of works that lasted nearly seven months and cost 27 million pounds sterling, the BRDC (owner of the circuit) gathered the who’s who of British motorsports, as five of the six British world champions were present (only Lewis Hamilton did not attend among the 800 guests).

The modernization process includes, in addition to 41 new garages, three large reception halls, a conference center, a business center, and a 100-seat auditorium. The objective is for Silverstone to not only be a circuit used by different categories (F1, Moto GP, FIA GT…) but also a prime location for business relations: new product launches, corporate seminars centered around motorsports… This makes Silverstone the largest exhibition space located between London and Birmingham.

Richard Phillips, the general manager of the circuit, states: “Building on the success of last year’s circuit modification, The Wing is another superb addition to the history of Silverstone, and we must acknowledge and thank the BRDC for having the vision to invest in the future of the circuit as we are expanding and diversifying our revenue streams. This building is not only a superb base for hosting our main races, but it also offers the flexibility to host conferences, exhibitions, launches, dinners, and receptions. Silverstone is one of the best automotive infrastructures in the world, and British motorsports have a home we can all be proud of.”

Here is yet another proof that, to progress and secure their future, European circuits are forced to invest heavily to keep up with the level set by circuits like Singapore, Abu Dhabi, or China. The virtuous circle initiated by signing a long-term contract has thus provided the conditions for an expansion praised by all and should make life easier for the teams traveling to the circuit.
