McLaren will supply direct injection for NASCAR

On the occasion of the 2012 season, NASCAR will undergo a significant technological change with the adoption of direct injection instead of the carburetors used for over 60 years. To facilitate this transition, it has chosen to entrust this system to McLaren Electronics, which has been supplying all Formula 1 teams since 2008.

This agreement announced a week before the famous Daytona 500 will be very impactful for the Woking-based team’s subsidiary as it will have to provide a reliable and fair system in the two most publicized automotive categories in the world.

Peter van Manen, the Managing Director of McLaren Electronics, is well aware: «Having achieved the role of exclusive supplier for the two most important categories of motorsport in the world is an incredible performance for us. Today’s announcement means that starting from the F1 2012, McLaren Electronics will provide the standard ECU for NASCAR and Formula 1.»

This is also an important achievement for McLaren since the United States is the world’s largest market for sports cars, a segment on which the company will embark in 2011 with its MP4-12C, as Ron Dennis acknowledges: «As a group, McLaren takes its commitment to North America very seriously: in addition to our involvement in Nascar, the next 12 months will see the launch of the MP4-12C in the high-performance car segment. With these two projects, we are confident in our expertise to build the most effective solutions and to maintain the incredible reputation that the McLaren name has built over almost 50 years of motor racing competition.»

Here is a new sign of the importance that European manufacturers place on the American market and why Bernie Ecclestone was very supportive of a return of Formula 1 to the United States. This will be the case from 2012 with the Austin Grand Prix.
