Vitaly Petrov could secure a prime spot in Formula 1 in the coming hours. According to the latest rumors, he would join the Renault team in 2010. In any case, he has just arrived at the Valencia track.

Renault evaluated several candidates for the available seat alongside Robert Kubica in 2010. The team even considered at one point waiting until the end of next week, after the Valencia tests, to make any decision.

However, Petrov has emerged in recent days as the number one candidate. According to some sources, he reportedly visited the Enstone factory last week to continue his discussions. Although the team has so far remained silent about Petrov’s position, the driver arrived at the Valencia circuit this Sunday. He was seen in discussions with Renault personnel, including the team principal, Eric Boullier, within the team’s motorhome.

At 25, the Russian finished in second place in the GP2 series last year, behind the German Nico Hülkenberg, who was appointed as a Williams race driver.
