The Singapore circuit officials are considering making changes to their Formula 1 track for 2011 in order to increase the overall average speed. According to a report published in a local newspaper, the race directors are thinking of making significant modifications to the Yas Marina Bay circuit.
The night race is one of the longest on the calendar since the fastest lap is 1:48.240, achieved by Fernando Alonso. The two past events have lasted almost two hours, the maximum limit for a Grand Prix imposed by the FIA.
The officials do not plan to make any changes before this year’s race, but they are exploring development opportunities in two areas of the track for 2011. The zigzag right-left around turns seven and nine could be transformed into a simple 90-degree turn around the War Memorial.
But more significantly, the changes would see the removal of the chicane that passes under the grandstand at the end of the track, near where Nelson Piquet crashed in 2008.
Justin Chew, executive director of the Singapore Tourism Board, stated: « We are always looking for ways to improve the Singapore Grand Prix. It’s for the benefit of the race, aiming to make it more exciting for fans and drivers. »
