The organizers of the Bahrain circuit have announced that their circuit will undergo significant changes this season. Sakhir will indeed host the first round of the Formula 1 World Championship on March 14.

With an expanded grid as there will be 26 cars, the race directors have decided to use an additional loop for this year’s event. It will turn left shortly after turn 4 (right) at the top of the hill during the first segments of a lap.

There will then be a new sequence of five turns before the drivers and their cars return to the original circuit. These modifications increase the total track length from 5.412 km to 6.299 km.

R. Alzayani Zayed, president of the Bahrain International Circuit, stated: « The loop was completed in 2006 with the aim of satisfying competitors and fans. »

« We held an inaugural race that same year which proved to be extremely successful. With the modifications made to the regulations and Formula 1 teams this year, it is the perfect time to evolve the circuit with new challenges and new overtaking opportunities. »
