Formula 1 teams will be able to be represented next year at the hearings of the FIA International Court of Appeal (International Court of Appeal – ICA). The current judges of the ICA will still hold the majority of the seats, but appeals can now be reviewed by what the FIA describes as ‘co-opted judges’.
According to a statement from the FIA: « From the start of the 2010 Formula 1 season, in agreement with the FIA and the teams, it was decided to introduce judges proposed by the F1 teams to give their opinion during hearings related to Formula 1. »
These appeals will be heard by a jury composed of the current elected members of the ICA and ‘co-opted’ judges.
The FIA stated that this initiative was partly made to increase confidence in the decisions rendered by the ICA: « The ICA seized this opportunity to add existing knowledge and expertise to broaden the functioning of the ICA and further enhance transparency and public trust in the functioning of the ICA. »
The statement adds that the team judges will have to « adhere to the same standards of independence and impartiality » as the elected ICA judges.
