Formula 1 will introduce a new points system from 2010 after the World Motor Sport Council approved the F1 Commission’s proposal to award points to the top 10 drivers in each race.
According to a declaration by the World Council, following today’s meeting: « Thanks to the extensive network of 13 teams, and following the recommendations of the F1 Commission, a new points system will be implemented for the 2010 season. »
The new points allocation system in the order will be as follows: 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1.
The change was proposed because next year, there will be 26 cars at the start of each race since 1995. This is the first amendment since 2003 because the current system came into effect almost seven years ago.
