Nyck de Vries gets back behind the wheel after his stint in F1
The Dutchman will make his return to Formula E after experiencing a difficult period at AlphaTauri during the first half of the 2023 season.
Nyck de Vries will make his return to Formula E after his stint in Formula 1 with AlphaTauri. The Dutchman has signed a multi-year contract with the Mahindra Formula E team following Lucas Di Grassi’s departure. He will team up with Edoardo Mortara for the 10th season of the World Championship.
This decision comes after a difficult period for Nyck de Vries, who, after failing to score any points in 10 races at AlphaTauri, was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo in the middle of the season.
The Dutchman is returning to Formula E after winning the title in 2021, with four wins in ePrix and four podium finishes to his name. The 2024 season is set to begin with pre-season testing in October, with the first race taking place in January in Mexico. He is also expected to have a role in the Toyota team, competing in the Hypercar category in WEC, in addition to his duties in Formula E next season.
De Vries thrilled to return to Formula E
« It is truly exciting to join such an important automotive manufacturer as Mahindra and represent them in Formula E, said De Vries. « I am particularly enthusiastic about the team’s future projects. The foundation is already solid and the team has all the tools for success. I believe that in the future, we will be able to extract even more potential from the project and the organization, so being part of this process was very appealing to me. »
Nyck de Vries believes he is ready to take on more responsibilities within his future team. « I think it’s no secret that the team had a difficult start with the Gen3, although there were positive signs of improvement during the latter half of last season. I believe the team can continue to build on these learnings, and with the additional changes and plans in place for the future, we can make even greater progress in terms of performance at the beginning of our new journey together. »
He expresses his excitement to be able to drive again in a championship that he appreciates. « Coming back to Formula E is like coming back home. I have been part of the Formula E family for three seasons, I know everyone very well. I can’t wait to find a familiar environment and to return to where, ultimately, I have always loved driving. »
