Sergio Perez knows how to put things into perspective. The Mexican driver was very satisfied after his first day of free practice today at Monza. However, he experienced an unfortunate incident that could have had serious consequences. During the second session, the Red Bull driver slightly went off track at the famous Parabolica corner and lost control of his car. Approaching at a very high speed, he could have collided heavily with the barriers, but narrowly avoided it. It was more scare than harm for Checo, who later recounted the incident: « “I understeered on the exit and tried to keep the car on track. I thought I had it under control, but I touched a bit of gravel and that was it.” »

“We have found positive elements about the car”

However, Perez posted the third best time in both practice sessions of the day, which definitely helps soften the blow: « The positive point is that the car is working well. I feel comfortable with it. It’s the best Friday we’ve had in a long time. I think we have found some positive aspects of the car, so I hope we can show everything tomorrow and Sunday », warns the second place in the championship, visibly very happy with his first Italian day.

Last week, Sergio Perez indeed had a slightly tougher Friday, notably setting only the 7th fastest time in FP2 at Zandvoort. Moreover, he hasn’t won since Baku and his recent performances have not been particularly convincing, so can we expect the Mexican to be back in the running for victory this Sunday?
