The first tests of the 2008 season took place in Mugello, Italy, providing the opportunity to see the Audi and Mercedes go head-to-head for the first time.

Markus Winkelhock finished this last testing session on a high note by completing the fastest lap of these three days of testing.

The German from Audi is closely followed by two Mercedes drivers, Jamie Green and Paul di Resta. Their best times show a respective deficit of 0.166 and 0.854 seconds on the best time.

Mattias Ekström, the reigning world champion, was in first place for a good part of the day but ultimately finished in sixth place, just behind Alexandre Premat and Gary Paffett.

Ralf Schumacher was the fastest in a 2007 Mercedes C-Class with a time of 1:43.506.
