Giancarlo Fisichella confirmed the rumors that he had turned to other F1 teams to become a test driver, but this, of course, was before Force India hired him as a race driver.
Even if the Roman firmly believes that in 2008 he will not have the slowest car on the grid, many observers think it was time for him to retire rather than end up at the back of the grid with one of the smallest F1 teams.
« Everyone wanted me to quit the race, » said Fisichella on the official F1 website.
« On the contrary, I love challenges and I adore this sport and I want to prove to everyone that I’m not bad, » he added.
Fisichella acknowledges today that Renault would have liked to keep him as a test driver and that BMW-Sauber was also eager for his experience of nearly 200 Grand Prix races for the same type of position.
« I never considered this option at Renault. I wanted to stay in the race, » concluded the Italian, who lost his place in the French team to Nelson Piquet Jr.
