Lewis Hamilton believes he will have no excuse if he fails to win the world championship this year.
After his 2007 season, where he came within a hair’s breadth of becoming the first rookie world champion in F1 history, Hamilton believes he has everything he needs to achieve his goals and win the title in 2008.
« For my part, there is no excuse that can be valid, » he said in an interview with the Associated Press news agency.
Last year, there was the excuse that I was a rookie and everything was new. But this year, I will, of course, continue to learn, there will always be mistakes, but there will be no margin for error.
Despite being focused on the title, Hamilton says he is happy with his status in relation to his new teammate Heikki Kovalainen. Equality is the watchword.
« I completely understand this fairness, and I want Heikki Kovalainen to have exactly the same opportunities for victories as I do. I will have the same tires, the same engine, and knowing all that, it will be the best driver who wins. I don’t want to have any advantage, » said the Briton.
Then, referring to the time when Fernando Alonso was his teammate, he stated: « I think last year, equality was also present. He was the leader, at first, but it evolved. »
« He probably thought he was at the beginning. But I don’t think that was the case; we were supposed to be a team. He had to be on the same level. »
« Alonso showed me how he is not a true Formula 1 driver… » Concluded Hamilton.
